John Leslie Appleby

Heartfelt thanks to our Dutch friends for continuing to care for the remains of a gallant Australian Lieutenant John Appleby of the 2/6th Field Company Royal Australian Engineers cast into captivity on Java, Dutch East Indies in 1942 while assisting KNIL forces against Japanese attack. My late father, Sapper Frank Scott, was a proud member of the Company and Prisoner of War on Java, Changi, Burma-Thai Railway,Saigon and Nagasaki.LT Appleby escaped Prisoner of War and joined the Dutch Resistance,for 19 months carried out activities with his Resistance comrades (in anticipation of an Allied invasion) Sgt Wilhelmus Bechtholt KNIL, CTH (Tom) Powell and the beautiful Miss Hanna Christa (Hanny) Hilgers; they were betrayed, brought to summary trial and executed at Batoe Toellis by the Imperial Japanese Army.The Ereveld Ancol Field of Honour is maintained in a magnificent condition and is a great credit to the Nederlands War Graves Foundation and the people of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.LT Appleby was posthumously awarded the Verzetsherdenkingscruis (1982) and the Australian Commendation for Gallantry (2018).Wij die geven om ons broer sapper John Appleby zijn oprecht dankbaar voor de manier waarop u al 75 jaar voor hem zorgt en blijft voor hem zorgen.
